A Texan Abroad: All I want for Christmas…

Yes, you do want a food processor and if you get one you will be glad for all the reasons you think, and perhaps a few more that you haven't yet considered. What seems to be an almost pointless luxury in the US is indeed a surprisingly practical choice in Eastern Europe.

I have (and highly recommend) the Braun 600. I bought mine online in the US before going to Belarus to be married, and shipped it over. (I found the same model in an appliance store in my husband's hometown, but it was somewhat more expensive and I was shipping stuff over anyway.)

The Braun 600's instruction manual is printed in multiple languages, including Russian, making it possible for my husband (himself a wonderful kitchen helper) to experiment with the new toy. He is occasionally surprised by what I find necessary for our kitchen, but he is wholeheartedly in favor of our "mini-kombain."

Only one regret, which is that no machine will grate potatoes to the proper consistency for potato pancakes. Oh, you can get a decent result, even a tasty one. But for potato pancakes as God intended, there is no substitute for a box grater. ;) :)

I have owned one in the past, but didn't use it often enough because I simply didn't prepare enough food from sctratch as I lived alone then. I do want one that uses local current, though, and thus far I find prices here in Ukraine to be about on a par with the States. I will look at the Braun, and thanks for the recommendation. I will be especially interested if it also has a blender attachment. For some reason, my wife thinks she'd really like a blender...
